Investing Basics
Are you new to investing? Do you enjoy researching funds and following the market, or do you prefer a more hands-off approach? Learn more about the basics before diving in.
What am I investing in?
No matter your risk tolerance, remember that 529 plans structure and limit the investment options so that you don’t get hung up on not knowing what to select. When you invest in a 529 plan you are purchasing municipal securities, the value of which will vary with market conditions.
What is a portfolio?
A portfolio is a collection of financial investments owned by one person or entity including, but not limited to, stocks, bonds, real estate, and more. Our portfolios are designed around your risk tolerance comfort level to give you a variety of options.
How do I know which
portfolio is right for me?
Some portfolios automatically adjust as your beneficiary nears college age, while other portfolios are designed for those who want a more hands-on experience. Your portfolio selection is completely up to you and your investing comfort level.
What are my options?
Savings Portfolio
The Savings Portfolio is a lower-risk, FDIC-insured option for education savers seeking to minimize their exposure to market volatility.
Target Enrollment Portfolio
Our Target Enrollment Portfolios automatically adjust based on your child’s expected year of enrollment. This option may be a good fit for those who want a more hands-off approach to investing.
Custom Portfolio
Our six Custom Portfolios invest in stocks, bonds, and short-term reserves - all managed by Vanguard. This option may appeal to the do-it-yourself investor.
